One of our favorite foodie bloggers, Arlene from Flour on My Face, offered up a great guest blog idea for the Summer: Sangria recipe! We jumped at the chance for this delectable beverage, which is perfect for 4th of July!

Sangria ingredients with wine.jpg

1 750ml bottle of red wine- I used a 2008 Sterling Vintner's Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
2 lemons sliced
2 tangelos sliced
2 limes, one cut into wedges and one sliced
1 cup strawberries, sliced
3 tbs sugar
6 cups of ginger ale or orange flavored soda
I also added a handful of lemon verbena leaves. You can omit this or add any other lemon flavored herb. Lemon basil would also work well..

Sangria ingredients.jpg

Instructions

The day before you plan on serving the Sangria

Slice or cut the citrus into wedges.
Squeeze the wedges into a large container
Add the citrus slices to the container.
Pour the wine over the citrus.
Add the sugar and lemon verbena leaves.
Stir.
Place the container in the refrigerator over night.
Next day before serving add the strawberries or any other berry you would like to use into the container.

Add the ginger ale or orange flavored soda.

Fruity Sangria.jpg

Stir.
Add ice to a wine glass, scoop some fruit out with a ladle and add to each glass.
Pour some Sangria over the ice
Garnish the edge of the glass with a slice of lemon, lime or orange and enjoy!

You can use any type of fruit you have on hand to make Sangria. Get creative and have fun while enjoying the summer and a delicious ice cold glass of Sangria.

Summer is the season that I really like to sit back and relax with a great book. There are few things I love more then grabbing a good book and soaking up some rays with a cool glass of water (or wine). Luckily you can get an AMAZING selection of books and e-books with Cash Back from Ebates. Here are a few that I would strongly reccomend:

SummerReading

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender is an odd scifi-esque novel. Bender is a strong, creative writer, and this story is unlike any I have ever read.

I think that The Glass Castle was on the NYTimes Bestseller list for well over a year, and it is no surprise. The gripping, beautiful memorable is one of the most widely adored books I have read. I have given it to family and friends that have all adored it.

While I am skeptical about the upcoming remake of The Great Gatsby, despite my adoration for Leonardo DiCaprio, I can't help but feeling an itch to reread this classic.

Some people have told me that they thought Everything is Illuminated is a tad difficult to get into. But dive head first and stick with this hilarious and poignant semi-autobiographical novel. AFTER you read it be sure to check out the movie starring Elijah Wood.

Confession: I am a total history nerd. But you don't have to be one to enjoy this amazing true story. In the Heart of the Sea is about a whaling ship attacked by a sperm whale off the coast of Nantucket - the true story of the Melville Classic Moby Dick. Nathaniel Philbrick is a truly gifted writer. Be sure to grab this before the movie comes out (rumor has it that Thor himself will be staring).

FFCollage

It's officially Summer which means it's time to show a little more skin and lighten up on the cosmetics. These five beauty products are my absolute must haves to maintain a fresh and healthy glow while having a little fun in the sun.

  1. I am crazy about Butter London nail polish and Trout Pout is my absolute fav of their 5-piece Spring/Summer collection.  This color is a nearly neon shade of peach and glows against a summer tan.
  2. Oil of Olay Total Effects Tone Correcting UV tinted moisturizer is easily my favorite must have product this year.  It conceals with an SPF and tint as it heals those fine lines and wrinkles.  The sheer tint is perfect for summer and can be worn alone, without foundation or concealer.
  3. Yes to Blueberries Brightening Towelettes is the only makeup removing towelettes I've tried that I not only like, but LOVE!  All other towelettes leave me feeling as though there is a layer of product that needs to be rinsed off.   Yes to Blueberries leaves my face feeling so clean and tingly with its blueberry, lemon peel and apple extracts.
  4. I am not good at all when it comes to blending eyeshadow, so Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eyeshadow was an amazing discovery for me.  The cream is so easy to blend, is highly pigmented, and lasts all day long.  Tough as Taupe, a beautiful medium purple brown shade, goes perfectly with any eye color.  I use my finger to apply a little bit of the shadow to the outer corners of my lid and then apply a light shimmer shadow to the rest of my lid for an easy, last all day look.
  5. Argan Oil is my most recent discovery and will keep your hair frizz free while at work or at the beach.  I have very dry frizzy curly hair that I straighten every day.  I apply a dab of Argan Oil to towel dried hair right before I blow dry it and I end up with super soft "normal" hair.   It's not like those oils that just sit on your hair and don't soak in.   This actually soaks into my hair and leaves my hair feeling so soft with silky movement.
Have you tried any of these products before?  If so, what did you think?  I'd love to hear about your must have beauty products for Summer!

Liza is our guest blogger from www.addictedtosaving.com.  She has been running her blog since 2009.  Her goal is to empower her readers with the tools necessary to save money.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A common misconception people have of me is that I'm constantly driving from store to store shopping. In actuality, I spent most of my days blogging on Addicted to Saving and I only go shopping once, maybe twice a week. I go grocery shopping every week to my local grocery store as I maximize their sales with high value coupons. And, I will go to my local drugstore once every other week to take advantage of their sales. Beyond that, you will very seldom see me out and about.
That doesn't mean I don't shop, though! I shop online all the time! I shop online for three reasons:
1) Convenience. I don't have to leave my house to shop and can save time AND gas money by turning on my computer.
2) Savings. I can very easily check out sales and compare prices at two or three online stores to find the best deal.
3) Cash back. Ebates provides me with online coupon codes to use and save money AND they pay me cash back on my online purchases!
I gave myself a challenge to see if I could buy a full outfit for myself and my hubby from head to toe for close to $100. Including shipping costs. Take a look at what I scored for a total of $103.46! And, I got paid $2.31 from Ebates to make these purchases!
My Outfit
Dress: Old Navy Women's Tie-Waist Tube Maxi Dresses on sale $27.50
Shoes: Old Navy Women's Embellished Wedge Flip-Flops in Gold Glitter on sale $12.00
Underwear: Victoria's Secret Cotton Bikini with Ruffles, on clearance $3.99
Bra: Victoria's Secret Multi-Way Bandeau Bra, on clearance $14.99
Hubby's Outfit
Shorts: Old Navy Men's Plaid Poplin Shorts, $15.00
Shirt: JCPenney St. John's Bay® Solid Piqué Polo Shirt in Black, $9.00
Boxers: Old Navy Men's Printed Poplin Boxers, on sale $5.99
Shoes: JCPenney Surfcrown® Black Plaid Flip Flop, on sale $9.00
Total Spent on OldNavy.com: $60.49 (shipping free since I spent over $50)
2% Cash Back on Old Navy: $1.21
Total Spent on JC Penney: $18.00 (shipped free to store)
4% Cash Back on JCPenney.com: $0.72
Total Spent on Victoria's Secret: $24.97 ($5.99 shipping is included in the total)
2% Cash Back on Victoria's Secret: $0.38
Total Out of Pocket: $103.46
Total Cash Back from Ebates: $2.31
While I did end up going over budget slightly, I think I did a pretty good job! What kind of deals have you found while shopping on Ebates?
I know it has become a bit of a cliche as far as skin care goes, but a few years ago I hopped the bandwagon, and haven't looked back: wear sunscreen every day. The benefits for your skin are seemingly endless. With incredibly sensitive skin, this is an idea that I struggled with for many years. Then a friend made a suggestion that has changed my outlook entirely:
neutrogena.jpg
Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is perfect for anyone with sensitive, combination, oil, or normal skin. It does not leave any kind of unpleasant reside on your skin; in fact, I think it gives a subtle little glow. And while you might expect this product to break obliterate your budget, it is under $10 at drugstore.com! Stock up now with your 6.0% Cash Back :)
One of my favorite things about working at Ebates is when I discover an online store chock full of clothing and accessories to help me build up my wardrobe. I recently stumbled on DrJays, and am pretty thrilled by the pieces that I found. They are going to be Summer staples for sure.
DrJays
1. Sparkle through the season with a cold shoulder top
2. Great tee for the 4th, right?
3. Fun and functional laser cut wedge
4. Add a little nautical to your look with this striped dress
5. Classic cropped jeans from Levi's
Summer has hit, kids are out of school - but what can you do to have fun, encourage simple and classic entertainment and do it all for less, or even better for FREE?!
We wanted to provide you with a list of 10 things you can do this summer that are FREE to help your budget, time and maximize that summer fun! The best part is that many of these activities will possibly give you more time together as a family!
Here's a list of 10 ideas of FREE things you can do:
  1. Free fishing - Enjoy FREE fishing days in the month of June and other summer months all across the country meaning that you do not need a fishing license to fish! Check out the list Free Fishing Days 2012 to find out what dates are available in your area.
  2. Find free roller skating across the nation - Wow, this brings back memories from our childhoods! This is a new program and you can check out the list of roller skating rinks that are currently part of the Kids Skate Free program that are participating now. If there is not one in your area, they have a letter already drafter that you can send to your local rink to ask them to participate.
  3. Summer Reading Programs - This is definitely a family favorite as Alex and I remember loving these reading programs at our local library! They are available all over the country from your local libraries to some national chains. You will want to check the list of Kids Summer Reading Programs 2012 for the full list!
  4. Free bowling - There are many great ways to bowl for free across the nation as part of the Kids Bowl Free summer program. Check out the details and locations on the Kids Bowl Free site.
  5. Free summer movies or concerts in the park for the community - Check in your local newspaper, your local city's or county's websites for the calendar of events for the low-down on the community movies and concerts in the park. Plus you may see other ideas or activities going on in your area too!
  8. Home Depot Free kids building workshops - Similar to Lowe's, Home Depot also has a kids free building workshops. You can see their schedule of projects on the Home Depot Kids Free Workshops site.
  9. Don't forget movie night - If you or a friend have a projector and a sheet, schedule a outside movie night and invite your friends! If you want to add a fun dimension to it, if you and your friends chip in you can rent a cotton candy machine; what kid doesn't love cotton candy? :)
  10. Schedule with your friends to have fun playdates throughout the summer - If you or your friends have a trampoline, pool and even a swingset it can be a fun way for the kids to get together and play with your family's summer fun toys while the adults enjoy some time of relaxing as well.
Also, consider summertime a great time to educate your children on the topic of finances and complete the family financial focus worksheet together and learn about the family's budgeting. It can be a good time to get them involved with couponing too! They can learn everything from cutting and counting (for the younger kids) and organizing in groups and categories (for the older kids). There are so many more skills even such as addition/subtraction/fractions/multiplication practice and the challenge of getting as much as they can with the family's grocery budget on items your family would eat (obviously for the older kids on this one!) while at the same time build those life application skills from preschoolers all the way through high school! Plus you will enjoy the help from coupon cutting to grocery shopping trip planning and implementing!
Enjoy these ways to play, learn and have fun over these summer months!
Alex and Cassie run the site The Thrifty Couple but haven't always been thrifty - in fact, after they were first married they racked up over $100K and learned the hard way how to pay it off in seven years. They started their site to share those tips and resources to help you \meet your every financial goal.
I will admit I find myself paying way too much attention to wild and crazy trends. Recently I have found myself paying much more attention to more classic pieces and looks. One of the places that I have really taken a liking to is LL Bean. They have a great collection is classic pieces that are not going to break the bank. These are the pieces on my wish list:
2. Polka dots add a fun print to the classic camp shirt
3. Chic and flattering cargo jacket great for Spring and Fall
4. Rock this Parisian inspired tee with red lips for a lovely feminine look
Five Must-Haves for Any Summer Party
Summer party season is in full swing. Whether it's a backyard BBQ or pool party, chances are you'll be spending time with friends and family at a casual gathering in the coming months. If you are hosting a summer soiree, keep it simple and stress-free with these five must-haves for any summer party.
Grill & Grilling Supplies
Grilling is synonymous with summer. Charcoal or gas, a sturdy, well constructed grill is one of the most versatile pieces of cooking equipment for home cooks and professional chefs alike. In addition to standard summer fare like hot dogs and burgers, grills can also be used to cook pizzas, quesadillas, and virtually any vegetable or fruit. When preparing food on a grill, be sure to use heat-resistant handle utensils and heavy-duty oven mitts to protect against burns.
Classic Cocktails
Keep guests happy while you are cooking by offering a variety of classic summer cocktails like margaritas and daiquiris or create your own signature drinks with flavored syrups such as Monin Gourmet Flavorings.  Invest in a quality bar blender and stock your bar with your favorite spirits, fruit juices, sodas, and margarita mix, as well as cocktail shakers and cocktail picks to make mixing and serving your guests' favorite drinks fast and easy.
Festive Tableware
Think beyond red plastic Solo cups and paper plates this summer and set your summer party tables with festive tableware. Choose unique pieces to match the theme of your party to set the mood for your guests. Mason drinking jars and cactus margarita glasses are a great addition to casual gatherings while sophisticated china dinnerware provides a perfect backdrop for menus at more formal affairs.
Fun & Functional Décor
Often unpredictable, summer weather and warm weather pests can put a damper on any summer celebration. Be prepared for the elements by incorporating functional pieces in your party décor. A fun and functional tiki torch can be transformed from a lighting element into insect repellant with citronella tiki torch fuel, keeping guests comfortable and bug-free.
Sweet Treats
Finish off your summer party by offering guests a variety of sweet treats. Cupcakes are a fuss-free favorite so grab a muffin pan and bake up some with summer-inspired flavors like pina colada, key lime pie, or orange cream pop. Ice cream is another good option and can be easily prepared in an inexpensive ice cream maker and served with a variety of toppings like fresh fruit, sprinkles, candy, and nuts.
One of the current trends that I absolutely love, despite its absurdity, is over the top nail art. I love the playful excess of it, however, I am not willing to break the bank at a salon for a manicure that I am probably going to destroy in a day or two. Lucky for me, the folks at Sally Hansen found me a solution with their Nail Effects line:
saloneffects2.jpg
While they aren't going to last more then 5 days or so, they are cheaper then a manicure, and easy to apply. You follow the simple instructions inside, and you are good to go - no dry time! They come in a great variety of colors and prints.
